Two Kinds of Money
Back when I was teaching, many students, after so many times of explanations and corrections, still wrote some simple words incorrectly. So, in front of the birthday candles, I made a wish: “I hope my students will learn to distinguish between those words.” What was the result? Unsurprisingly, my students continued to make those mistakes, of course. Sigh! A precious quota of birthday wishes was wasted!
It got me thinking: What’s the difference between prayer and making a birthday wish?
When my daughter was three years old, she imitated adults and made little pieces of paper into fake money, pretending to buy things at the supermarket. “Making a wish” is like homemade currency; you know it’s fake, and you can’t exchange it for real goods. It’s just a way to give yourself hope, nothing more.
So, what is prayer? Prayer is like real money. Real money is given value by the government, backed by the legal authority of the government or the issuing bank, and it says “payable on demand.” Therefore, if you present a £20 banknote, you can get goods worth £20 in return. Self-made money, no matter how you write “payable on demand for ten million pounds,” will not be recognized, and you won’t get any goods. It’s a matter of who authorises it. Similarly, with prayer, it’s the Lord who calls the shots. If you pray what He has promised, then your prayer will undoubtedly be fulfilled.
Is that really the case?
Attributes of God
I once read a post online with the topic “The Biggest Lie Your Parents Have Ever Told You”. One netizen said that when he was small, his family was not a rich one. His mom told him, “When the ice cream truck’s music is playing, it means they’ve run out of ice cream.” And thus, whenever he heard the ice cream truck music, he was so disappointed and wouldn’t ask for an ice cream. While our earthly parents love us and sacrifice a lot for us, they still don’t tell the truth for various reasons. But God doesn’t, and not only does He not lie, but He also CANNOT lie. If you ask me, “Is there anything the Almighty God can’t do?” I’d say, “Yes, He can’t go against His attributes.” He is holy, faithful and true, just by nature. He can’t go against these attributes. In other words, as long as He says He will grant your prayer, there’s no way your prayer won’t be fulfilled.
Request in the Highest Authority’s Name
The Bible says in John 14:13, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name.” What does this mean? It means Jesus is saying, “When you ask with the correct name, I will give it to you.” So, what makes prayer work? You need to recognize where the authority comes from. Prayer comes with authority from Heaven, allowing you to act with that authority. Do you know why you end your prayer with “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray?” It’s because you’re invoking the name of Jesus Christ, acting in the highest authority, and according to the promises, to make your prayer effective. Let me give you an example. Imagine I’m in the kitchen of Buckingham Palace, and I call out to the royal chef, “Hey, how about making some dim sum?” Do you think anyone will make a dim sum for me? Not a chance! But if I go there and make the same request on behalf of the king, in the name of the king, then they’ll bring me all sorts of delicacies. When you pray in the name of Jesus Christ (or make the sign of the cross in the Catholic tradition), you’re praying in the name of the true God, with the highest authority, telling the angels, “Please bring me these gifts!” What you’re doing is incredibly honourable and beyond human imagination. It’s not something a fool does, talking to the air. Instead, you are executing the power of faith.
One day, an old student came to me and said he had seen a dead body on the street, dead of falling from a tall building. The person had died in a gruesome manner, and the image was haunting him. I prayed for him in the name of Jesus Christ, and then the image and the fear disappeared. Do you think it’s a psychological effect? If I had the power to say a few words and dispel fear, then what’s the use of clinical psychologists and psychiatrists? Let me handle it! Can you try to use your psychological effect to dispel fear? Prayer is not talking to thin air; it’s holding authority. And this authority doesn’t come from the one praying; it comes from the Almighty, and He grants us the authority to claim the abundant gifts He’s willing to give us. So, if it’s really that true, why are there so many Christians haven’t experienced answered prayers?
Reasons Prayers Not Answered
There are several reasons why prayers may not be answered:
- 1. Wrong target to pray to:
- You may be praying to a “God” that is created in your own desire, expecting this “god” to serve you, rather than recognizing God’s true attributes. For example, praying for unexpected wealth to fall from the sky or praying to avoid facing the consequences of wrongdoing. If you know God, you wouldn’t pray like this. Jesus Himself is the “Word” (John 1:1), so what we request in His name must align with the “Word”; otherwise, it is not truly in His name. For example, if I were to “pray in the name of the Lord Jesus that people here should not believe in Jesus”, undoubtedly it is actually not asked in the name of Jesus. The Bible uses the metaphor of the “sword of the Spirit” to describe God’s Word. God’s Word not only refutes error but is also wielded as a “sword”, spoken through the mouth as the words of the Holy Spirit, allowing this “Word” to be released and realised within the circumstances on the earth.
- 2. Wrong “currency” is used:
- You’re praying for things that God hasn’t promised or things that aren’t aligned with His will. It’s like using Chinese Yuan to buy things in European countries. This act is not law-breaking, but you simply won’t get the goods. For example, praying for world peace is indeed a noble wish, and God’s attribute is also delighting in peace. Praying for this is not wrong, but this prayer will not come to fruition because the Bible has clearly prophesied the turmoil in the end times, with nations rising against nations and great tribulation and testing for people. These things have been foretold in the Bible, so if you pray for world peace, where there is no war, it naturally won’t be fulfilled. To have your prayers answered, you need to use the right “currency”.
- Similarly, if you are unhappy in your place of service and you keep praying to change your workplace, but you face various obstacles, it is very likely that it is God’s will for you to stay in that place because there are certain lessons or tasks He wants you to complete there.
- 3. Not letting go of the banknote:
- You’re holding on to your prayers and not surrendering them to God. Imagine you go to the supermarket, place all your items at the checkout counter, but you refuse to let go of the money in your hand. No matter how the cashier tries to pull it away, you insist, “I have this £50 note, according to the law, you must give me goods worth £50!” The cashier can only say to you, “Are you insane?” It’s just like when you have an argument with your family. You pray for peace and reconciliation in your home, but you are refusing to listen to God’s guidance, still surrendering yourself to your own temper and keep venting your anger. Or you still believe that “if I don’t keep giving more pressure to my loved one, he will never change!” You are trying to solve it your own way. This is similar to not releasing the money on your hand. To see your prayers fulfilled, you need to let go and entrust them to God.
- 4. Work in progress:
- God may be working on your request, but it hasn’t manifested yet. Much like water evaporating, changes are happening, but you can’t see them yet. Consider a situation: you pray for a change in the culture of a group, but God doesn’t work like the legends of aliens brainwashing Earthlings. He respects human free will and values active participation. So, when He intervenes in a group, it often takes considerable time to prepare His instruments, select, nurture, and transform them. Then, at the right moment, through a complex web of interconnected events, He facilitates the transformation of another person or group.
- 5. God’s own reasons:
- Sometimes, God may have other plans that you don’t understand. Sometimes the Lord deliberately withholds or the time is not right, and we must wait. Or there may be a different purpose that we will only understand later. There are also many times when we simply cannot explain why God grants one prayer and not another. I know that many unanswered prayers are a burden for many people, and the long waiting process can be trying. It’s like the ancient prophets of Israel who longed for the coming of the Messiah but did not see it in their lifetime. But we must not lose hope because when we meet the Lord face to face in heaven, we will understand everything.
Pray According to God’s Promises
So, what kind of prayer is considered using the right “currency”? The Bible provides many guidelines, and here are some examples.
- 1. Seeking forgiveness
- “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins.” (1 John 1:9) When we wrong someone, we need to apologise and make amends, but whether it’s accepted is the other person’s choice. However, when we recognize our wrongdoing and the offence against God, we can seek His forgiveness, and He will forgive us according to His faithfulness and justice. God has even paid the price for our sins through Jesus’ sacrifice, so He doesn’t need to hold our offences against us, and we can have eternal life.
- 2. Seeking material provision
- “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1) During my college years, there was a period when my family had no income, and my part-time jobs didn’t provide enough to cover expenses for the whole family. However, the Lord provided. It was a little here, a little there, and with help from others, I managed to complete my education without lacking anything. Despite that there are many challenges in my life, I no longer worry because I believe that the Lord’s provision is always sufficient. My dad said that it’s evident I can handle troublesome situations calmly. My friends say that even in the midst of internal and external conflicts, I can still manage to smile, which is truly remarkable. Is it because I’m naturally optimistic? No, it’s not. My inherent nature is quite sensitive and sceptical. It’s because I have the faith that the Lord’s provision is always sufficient, no matter the circumstances. As long as I pray to Him, He willingly bestows an abundance upon me, allowing me to face gains and losses with serenity.
- 3. Seeking protection
- The Bible says, “He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber.” (Psalm 121:3) Years ago, my husband wanted to fulfil a dream and go skydiving in Switzerland. I prayed for his safety and good weather. Unfortunately, the weather was unfavourable, and all the arrangements were cancelled, leaving him a bit disappointed. I wondered why God didn’t answer my prayer. Many years later, we discovered that my husband had an underlying heart condition that made skydiving unsuitable, which we didn’t know at the time. Thanks to God, He protected us without our knowledge.
- 4. Seeking peace
- “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7) God’s peace can come unexpectedly, even when you should be anxious and fearful. It’s like a calm in the midst of a storm. God wants to say to you, “Child, don’t be afraid. Pour out all your worries to me. I am with you, in control of everything. You don’t have to be afraid, and I will grant you peace.”
- 5. Seeking healing
- It’s not just physical ailments but also emotional and spiritual wounds. Sometimes, past burdens feel heavy, and you want a fresh start, but it seems impossible. You pray, entrust it to the Lord, and He helps you. From childhood to adulthood, many of my friends and I have experienced various pains, we come from families of abuse, mental illness, addiction and other painful past experiences. Every person carries hidden pain. Having witnessed so much, I stand here today to tell you that the Lord heals. You can pray with confidence.
- 6. Seeking strength and a way out
- Following Jesus is not always smooth sailing, and biblical figures like the apostle Paul endured many hardships. But they were never overwhelmed: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9) Just as an old hymn says, “God has not promised skies always blue, flower-strewn pathways all our lives through. God has not promised sun without rain, joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But God has promised strength for the day, rest for the labour, light for the way, grace for the trials, help from above, undying sympathy, undying love.”
- 7. Interceding for others
- In Jesus’ time, four friends brought a paralyzed man to see Jesus by lowering him through the roof of a crowded house because they believed in Jesus’ power to heal. Jesus commended their faith and healed the paralyzed man. We can also bring the people around us to God in prayer, and their lives can be transformed. Many people’s salvation today is the result of years of prayer from many others.
These are just a few examples. The Lord says, “I am your ever-present help.” The Lord says, “My grace is sufficient for you.” Take these promises with you in your prayers. Prayer is not just a moment; it’s a lifelong journey of entrusting our concerns to God. As we continue to give Him our “currency,” we will see the blossoming of His grace along our path.
Let’s turn to the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus taught us, to pray for learning to pray:
Our Father in heaven, (Our Lord, who joyfully listens to our prayers,)
Hallowed be your name, (Today, we recognize that the name You have given us is precious. We can be saved through the name of Jesus Christ, and we can pray in the name of Christ. We earnestly desire that the power and glory of Your name can manifest in us and through our prayers, revealing Your goodness to all.)
Your kingdom come, (As we acknowledge Your presence and authority in our prayers, we willingly submit to Your kingdom’s rule, allowing Your Kingdom to operate within us.)
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Teach us to pray according to Your will, and through our prayers, release the blessings and grace of Your heavenly Kingdom into this physical world.)
Give us today our daily bread, (Lord, we hunger in our hearts. Feed us with Your Word and Your truth. Teach us to pray for daily provisions, so we may learn to entrust ourselves to You and experience a deeper relationship with You.)
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, (Lord, forgive us for our thoughts and actions, as we also choose to forgive those who have wronged us. May our prayers be heard and our hearts changed.)
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. (Protect us from temptations and rescue us from danger. Help us walk in Your ways and be vigilant against evil.)
For Yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (As we pray like this, we acknowledge that You have an eternal Kingdom, authority, and glory.)
In Jesus Christ’s victorious name, we pray. Amen.
